Well obviously some had died and some came back home. Most of them were drafted into the war and US lost the least men because we were in it for the shortest time. Drafted soldiers jobs were taking by blacks moving to north in the great migration. The soldiers got their jobs back when they got back.
They used the tactic of island-hopping. That meant they captured one island at a time. It cost the lives of many soldiers and they could gain just a very small territoriy at a time.

Rumor is some of the war veterans called it jap hill, due to it reminded them of the Japanese soldiers would bunker themselves in the side of hills in WWII, US soldiers would radio planes to spot Japanese soldiers bunkered in the hills,US soldiers told them to check that hill for japs or see if that's a jap hill. When US soldiers came back and moved to grand terrace the hill reminded them of some of the hills back in japan.
