Earth, Wind and Fire was formed in LA in 1969 by Maurice White. They had great chart success in the 1970's, but only reached the charts twice in the 1980's. Their only number one hit on the r&b charts was 'Shining Star' in 1975.

Not sure if the song was written around the time of her mother's death, but Donna did indeed write a song about her death called "You Were Always There", which was released as a single in 1973 and hit number 1 on Billboards country singles chart.
