The first anime I ever watched was Dragon Ball when I was a kid, it used to come on the TV. I didn't understand the concept but I liked the fighting. But after growing up, I watched Fullmetal Alcehmist: Brotherhood. And after finishing that, I was HOOKED and still am!
Imokawa Mukuzo holds the title of first anime, supposedly made some time in 1917, however Astro Boy was the first official anime to air on Japanese television.

I believe it was On Demand on Comcast, however, I have not seen it on a t.v. channel. It might be aired on Adult Swim someday, but that isn't likely because they tend to show action or shonen anime.

As far as I know there aren't many if at all in the US (first thing that comes to mind is Anime Network), but there are several other conventional television networks that do broadcast anime along with other animated TV shows. As far as in Japan, there are several TV channels that have large chunks of time dedicated to anime (e.g. Tokyo MX).
The Kanon anime series has been produced by two different studios, Toei Animation and Kyoto Animation. It was first shown on Fuji TV on January 31, 2002.
