This depends on what is meant by antibiotic. The word means against life.

However, many think that antibiotics are those that are naturally produced by one organism against another. In 1895, Vincenzo Tiberio noticed that mold was antibiotic. The mold was Penicillium.

Paul Ehrlich in the late 1880s noticed that certain dyes were antibiotic. So many others felt that these synthetic substances should also be classified with the ones produced naturally. This drug was arsphenamine.

Sulfa drugs also fall within this second group. This was first used around 1932.
