The first major battle in the Western Theater of the Civil War was the Battle of Shiloh, fought on April 6â??7, 1862. The Confederate Army ambushed the Union Army near the Tennessee River. Though the initial Confederate attack was successful, the Union army counterattacked the next day and forced the Confederates to retreat.

The first major Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi River was that of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, fought on August 9, 1861 between a Union Army of about 5,400 men , led by Gen. Lyon and Gen. Sterling Price's Missouri State Guard of 11,600 men.

Lyon was defeated and killed. The Federals lost 223 killed, 721 wounded and 291 missing. The Confederate casualties were 257 killed 900 wounded and 27 missing.
