Ancient people used petroleum seeps from pre-historic times. Oil was first discovered in the United States in Titusville, Pennsylvania, in the Oil Creek Valley when Colonel Edwin L. Drake struck oil there on August 27, 1859.
Concerning the US, oil first was discovered in Pennsylvania. Later Ohio came into the picture. At one time Texas itself meant "oil" On the world stage I believe oil was first discovered in Greece.
