The very first word revealed to the Prophet from Allah (through the Angel Jibrael) was "Iqra," which means "Read." The acquiring of worldly and religious knowledge is extremely important in Islam and this concept is shown in this first revealed word. Reading, learning, and acquiring knowledge is expected from anyone who claims to be Muslim, since all Muslims are required by Allah to be intelligent contributors to society.
A famous narration of the Prophet says, "The ink of a scholar is more valuable than the blood of a martyr." Another narration says that "A single scholar of religion is more formidable against Satan than a thousand devout worshippers." (This hadith was related by Ibn Majah and Tirmidhi) but the first word revealed was 'Iqra' meaning 'read.'
