How important is the covenant to Judaism?

It is at the very center of Judaism, or rather, it is the central defining feature of Judaism. First note that the Hebrew Scriptures discuss several covenants, the covenant of the rainbow made with Noah and his sons, the covenant of the parts made with Abraham are examples. However, when someone says "the covenant" they are usually asking about the covenant made between God and the Children of Israel at Siani. Jews traditionally hold that the entire Torah (quibbling about the final verses) is the product of that covenant and that all 613 commandments found in the Torah are part of this covenant.

No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God."

Who did Abraham pass on the covenment to?

The covenant made by God to Abraham applied to all who followed him and remained righteous. The synopsis to Genesis ch.4-10 reads 'Abram commanded to be perfect-He shall be a father of many nations-His name changed to Abraham-The Lord covenants to be a God unto Abraham and his seed for ever-Also, to give him the land of Canaan for an everlasting possession-Circumcision becomes token of everlasting covenant between God and Abraham' Further in the covenant it goes on to say that his people will be as the sands of the sea - meaning many. The covenant then goes on till verse 10 which you can read for yourself. Its proper title is The Abrahamic Covenant.

Abraham. There are three covenants. Two which God made with Abraham (Genesis ch.15 and Genesis ch.17), and one with Abraham's Israelite descendants in the time of Moses after the Exodus.1) In Genesis ch.15, the Covenant Between the Parts:a) God informs Abraham of future events (the Egyptian exile)b) God promises the land of Canaan (Israel) to Abraham's descendantsc) The covenant is finalized through a demonstration of God's presence (see Genesis 15:7-9 and 15:17).
