The rules of writing detective stories or any type of writing are opinions based on what works and what is considered acceptable. Some rules change as culture and usage change. Some rules are so basic that they have been applied since the beginning of story telling. Writers break rules at their own risk. The risk is losing reader interest and enjoyment of the story. Only skillful writers can bend the rules and still tell a successful story.
