It is difficult to answer this question because even back in prehistoric times, people built shelters to protect themselves from predators and from the weather. We know that native Americans built huts or used animal skins to create tent-like shelters that came to be called teepees (the word originated with the Lakota Sioux). And in Bible times, while some people were nomads, we know that royalty-- kings, queens and members of the royal family-- lived in indoor homes, some of which were quite elaborate.
