The answer is YES. There are an estimated 200 billion galaxies in the known Universe. Most of these galaxies are relatively similar to our own, some bigger, some smaller, some differently shaped. Most galaxies hold 50-200 billion stars, and average about 50,000 - 100,000 light years across. Light travels at 180,000 miles PER SECOND, so if it only takes 2 seconds to get to the moon, 30 seconds to Mars, but 100,000 light years to cross our own galaxy, imagine the size! Mind boggling!

Our home galaxy is called the Milky Way. There are billions of other galaxies, two of the commonly known ones being the Andromeda Galaxy and the so-called "Sombrero Galaxy" in the constellation of Virgo (officially NGC 4594). All galaxies come in 4 basic shapes. 1) Irregular (or irregularly-shaped) 2) Globular (or roundish-shaped) 3) Spirals 4) Barred Spirals. We first thought The Milky Way was a spiral galaxy but recently discovered it is actually a barred spiral.

Nearby galaxies include the Greater and the Lesser Magellanic Clouds, and Andromeda. Many galaxies are known only by their catalogue numbers, however. There are really a lot of them (billions and billions, as Carl Sagan used to say).

Probably the most famous galaxy other than the Milky Way is the Andromeda Galaxy. It's the largest (in terms of size; recent evidence indicates that the Milky Way may be more massive) galaxy in our local group of galaxies.

The Milky Way's shape is itself uncertain. We cannot look at the Milky Way from outside to see its shape. It would take too long for a rocket to fly to the outskirts or above the Milky Way to take a picture. We have worked out that the Milky Way is probably a spiral galaxy. To do that, we have observed spiral galaxies other than the Milky Way. Thus our inspiration for a spiralgalaxy has come from outside our own galaxy. So spiral galaxies do exist! And if this Milky Way galaxy is really a spiral galaxy (it is no doubt well ascertained that it is), then indeed there are other spiral galaxies out there.

Every scientist and astronomer has his or her own favorite, of course, but probably the M31 in Andromeda, the "great spiral nebula in Andromeda" is probably the best known for a couple of reasons.

First, it's apparently very similar to our own Milky Way, so we can look at M31 and say "That's what our galaxy looks like".

Second, it's going to collide with the Milky Way in about 4 billion years or so. That's kind of special, right there.

There are billions of other galaxies rather than the milky way. These galaxies hang around the universe and their population could even expand more!

Yes; many of the galaxies in the universe are shaped like the Milky Way galaxy, but many are not.

Yes, many more, too numerous to be counted. Some of those near us are: The Large Magellanic Cloud, The Small Magellanic Cloud, and Andromeda.

What are the dominant types of galaxies in the coma cluster?

What are four general shapes of galaxies?

Galaxies have different shapes because of what happens throughout their lives. Any galaxy, at one point or another, will encounter another or many galaxies. When encounters occur, gravity takes over. The larger of the two galaxies will consume the smaller one, this is called galactic cannibalism. The act of absorbing another galaxy will change the size of the galaxy it's shape and even the speed of its rotation. Our own galaxy, The Milky Way, is as large it is (100000-150000 Light years across.) because of galactic cannibalism. The Milky Way is as we speak consuming two other small galaxy. And in about 2 billion years, our nearest nieghbor, the Andromeda Galaxy, will collide with our galaxy. Both the Milky Way and Adromeda galaxy are spiral galaxies, but after they collide the resulting new galaxy will an elliptical galaxy, which looks like a bright white sphere.

Compare and contrast the three types of galaxies?

Galaxies that appear to have a bulge in the middle and arms that spherical outward, like pinwheels, are spherical. Elliptical galaxies look like round or flattened balls. Galaxies that do not have regular shapes are known as irregular galaxies.

Three quarters of all known galaxies are what galaxies?

That is a difficult question to fully answer as types of galaxies are not fully defined. A ball park figure would be dwarf galaxies, or spiral galaxies depending on the area in question. See related question for a full breakdown.

Galaxies are classified by their shape what are they called?

There are three types of galaxies, all of which are the same, with the exception of their shapes. There are the Elliptical galaxies (football-shaped) the Spiral galaxies (like the Milky way; vortex-shaped) and Irregular galaxies (all shapes other than spiral and football shaped).

What is the shortest distance between galaxies?

There are small "cluster" galaxies that are actually in contact with the Milky Way and other galaxies, either being absorbed or moving past the larger formations. Aside from these types, the Milky Way also has satellite dwarf galaxies, the largest being the Greater and Lesser Magellanic Clouds, with centers 160,000 and 200,000 light-years from the Milky Way, respectively. (The Milky Way is approximately 100,000 light-years in diameter.) The distance to the nearest "major" galaxy, Andromeda, was computed in 2005 as 2.52 million light-years.

What type of galaxy is the milky ways?

Our Milky Way galaxy is a 'Barred Spiral', type SBc.Edwin Hubble classified these types of spiral galaxies as "SB" ("Spiral", "Barred") in his Hubble sequence, and arranged them into three sub-categories based on how open the arms of the spiral are.SBa types feature tightly bound arms.SBc types are at the other extreme and have loosely bound arms.SBb type galaxies lie in between.SBm, was subsequently created to describe somewhat irregular barred spirals, such as the Magellanic Cloud galaxies, which were once classified as irregular galaxies, but have since been found to contain barred spiral structures.See related link for more information.

What is one way that an elliptical galaxy differs from the other types of galaxies?

Elliptical galaxies are large blob shaped galaxies that most galaxies will eventually look like. Elliptical galaxies are what happens when two or more large galaxies collide and coalesce.

How are galaxies and constellations similar?

They are both spiral galaxies. However, The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy (SBbc), whereas the Whirlpool Galaxy is a spiral galaxy without the bar (SAbc). See related links for a pictorial representation of the two types.

. How are spiral galaxies and Barrel spiral galaxies different?

•A barred spiral galaxy is a spiral galaxy with a central bar-shaped structure composed of stars. Bars are found in approximately two-thirds of all spiral galaxies.[1] Bars generally affect both the motions of stars and interstellar gas within spiral galaxies and can affect spiral arms as well.[1]•Edwin Hubble classified these types of spiral galaxies as "SB" (spiral, barred) in his Hubble sequence, and arranged them into three sub-categories based on how open the arms of the spiral are. SBa types feature tightly bound arms, while SBc types are at the other extreme and have loosely bound arms. SBb-type galaxies lie in between. A fourth type, SBm, was subsequently created to describe somewhat irregular barred spirals, such as the Magellanic Cloud galaxies, which were once classified as irregular galaxies, but have since been found to contain barred spiral structures. Among other types in Hubble's classifications for the galaxies are: spiral galaxy, elliptical galaxy and irregular galaxy. In 2005, observations by the Spitzer Space Telescope backed up previously collected evidence that suggested the Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy. Observations by radio telescopes had for years suggested the Milky Way is barred, but Spitzer's vision in the infrared region of the spectrum has provided a more definite calcul

Are Irregular galaxies are very large.?

Yes, they are usually of a similar size range to other types of galaxies, from a few thousand lightyears across to a million or more. Their formation is often as a result of two or more galaxies colliding, or coming close to each other.
