The first dog in space was named Laika (nicknamed Mutnik). She was sent in to space on Sputnik 2. Laika was the first living thing to visit space. Sputnik 2 went into space on the 3rd November 1957. It was launched by the Soviet Union. Sadly, Laika didn't make it back alive.

Depends. If you mean the first thing past the Karaman line (the point where atmosphere ends and space begins) then it was a V-2 Rocket launched by Nazi Germany in June of 1944. If you mean first thing orbiting then it was Sputnik.
