In 1949, the "Bumper-WAC" became the first human-made object to enter space.
It has been hypothesized that the "first" object from earth the exit the atmosphere and enter space was in fact the moon. However, the first documented man-made object to enter orbit was the Soviet satellite Sputnik, in 1957.
In the Friendship 7 spacecraft, John Glenn made an orbit around the planet. John Glenn became the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth on February 20, 1962, thanks to the Mercury-Atlas 6 (MA-6) mission.
Sputnik 1 was the first man made satellite put into space. There were earlier attempts that failed. Sputnik 1, launched on October 4, 1957, was the first man-made object that stayed there, i.e. successfully achieved earth orbit.
