It was originally named the Flavian Amphitheatre, or Amphitheatrum Flavium in Latin. The name Colosseum (or Coliseum) was later used in reference to the colossal statue of Nero nearby called the Colossus of Nero, designed after the Colossus of Rhodes.

The Colosseum in Rome was called the Flavian Amphitheatre(also the name of an arena in Pozzuoli, Italy). It was built between 70 and 80 AD by three successive emperors of the Flavius family : Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian (The latter two being sons of Vespasian).

What is Coliseum in Italian?

-- Coliseum ['kɒlə'sɪəm] Because 'Coliseum' is an invented word, there is no alteration to the pronunciation. It is similar with names - Coliseum is the name of something specific and so, Italians refer to it simply as 'Coliseum.' It would be the same with, say, the name of a person. John Smith. They would still call him John Smith, even though that is an English name, because names do not change.
