The US penny, named after the British penny or pence was first minted as the US penny around 1787. Pennies in the US were first pressed in copper.

CorrectionThe first US coin to carry the denomination 1 cent was the so-called Fugio cent authorized by the Continental Congress in 1787. The first cents issued by the new Federal government were Large Cents made in 1793.

Note that coins are said to be minted or struckrather than "pressed".
