If you have photo shop or some other art program with layers- then erase the layer all around the drawing so it's checkered - then save and submit it to deviantart. You will see where ever it was checkered now has no background.

Most drawings are of a file type that can be supported by DeviantArt without needing a preview (jpeg, PNG, etc.). However, some file types or certain sizes of some file types need a preview, particularily GIFS. If this tires you, try saving the image as a jpeg first.
