Before Roman armies were close enough for hand to hand combat with an enemy army, they had what is called a "first use weapon". For the Romans this would be the javelin or spear. It was thrown into the enemy ranks. For example other first use weapons of other ancient armies such as soldiers in the Persian empire was the bow and arrow.
Besides their body armor and helmets, they had their spear (pilim) knife,(pugio) shield(scutum). They also used various forms of artillery equipment, such as types of catapults that could hurl various kinds of nasty objects such as rocks, fire arrows, or larger arrows called bolts. They had slingers who used either stones or lead pellets, the forefathers or our bullets. But the most important piece of equipment a Roman soldier had was his dolabra, his digging tool. The Roman soldier actually did more digging in his various assignments, than fighting.
