Civil war uniforms were mainly made from wool. The reason for the wool was to keep soldiers warm as they were fighting often in cold weather. Southern uniforms however were made from jean cloth and wool.
Union soldiers wore blue uniforms made of wool, with cotton "blouses" or shirts.

Famed Brooks Brothers of NY won a contract to produce 14,000 Union uniforms for soldiers from New York. The uniforms were made in four sizes and were sold to the Union for $19.50 apiece.
