November 11, 1919 was the first official Armistice Day. It was officially renamed as Veterans Day in 1954. But the first real holiday for veterans of any kind was Decoration Day that was first observed on May 30, 1868 to honor those who had died during the US Civil War that ended in 1865. In 1967 Decoration Day was officially renamed as Memorial Day.
