Wolves were the first animal that lived in close proximity to man. They would eat the scraps of food that people left behind. Eventually some of them developed into domesticated dogs. The dogs became hunters for man as well as themselves; they would alert humans if anyone or anything was near where they lived. They became pets eventually and were probably used as a pack animal at times. Man and dogs became bonded to each other and man found that he could breed certain dogs who were the best hunter with each other and they became larger and stronger and were even better hunters.
Man also bred dogs for other purposes such as guarding herd animals when men domesticated them. Because of the different needs of man, a great variety of dogs became useful in their ability to help him.
