Food was very simple. Meal consisted of bread, sometimes unleavened, ie, made with no yeast and would be similar to naan or pitta bread today - flat and round. Other bread was like the small loaves of leavened bread that Jesus gained from the boy with two fish, which was a small pan bread baked for daily consumption. Barley, wheat & spelt was used, but rye was not cultivated in that area. On occasion, cereal grains were added, even lentil & bean meal. Bread's a good staple for life.

Meat was eaten - but not pork as this was forbidden by Jewish law - mostly lamb or mutton, and some poultry. Fish was also very common. Finally local vegetables and fruits like olives and dates were also common. Water was usually unsafe to drink and so the normal drink was wine mixed with water - firstly to make the water safe (as alcohol is an antiseptic) and secondly to ensure that the drinker did not get too drunk! This wine/water mixture was drunk by children as well as adults Unlike modern diets that are influenced by cuisines from all over the world, food in Biblical times tended to be rather repetitive and boring, eating similar food each day, unless the season called for fasting.
