The Union campaign in Western Tennessee was aimed at capturing the rail crossroads at Corinth, before driving South into Mississippi.

At Shiloh, the Confederate commander, Sidney Johnston, planned to manoeuvre Grant's army into a nearby swamp. But when Grant's troops were seen resting easy by the Tennessee river, unaware of any Confederates in the area, Johnston launched a surprise attack that nearly pushed them into the river.

By morning, Grant's troops had rallied, helped by reinforcements from the East, Johnston was killed, and his second-in-command, Beauregard, abandoned Corinth.
