This question should be narrowed down to which war. In the War of 1812, the British burned down the White House, as well as every other standing structure; with the exception of the US Marine Corps Barracks...legend says that the British left those standing out the respect they had for the US Marine Corps. During WW2, Japanese Troops landed on, and occupied portions of the state of Alaska (although it was a US Territory at the time). Japanese Balloon Bombs floated across North America; a deeply classified military secret to keep people from panicking. Even today, the US doesn't want people to know "much" about those Balloon Bombs. Japanese Submarines shelled the City of Santa Barbara, California...that had to be "played down." Japanese Submarines launched an airplane which bombed Brookings, Oregon...that had to be "played down."

Attack on soil on September 11,2001. The reason the US went to war in Afghanistan was because it was established globally that bin laden was behind the attack on the US 9/11 and that he was being harbored in Afghanistan by the Taliban. After many failed attempts to negotiate a turn over of bin laden to the US, the US finally launched formal attack on Afghanistan and more precisely the Taliban.
Congress did not want to get involved because no aggressive act had been made toward the US. They were afraid that by joining the war it would bring an attack to US soil.

The greatest percentage of soil is typically made up of mineral particles. These minerals come from the weathering of rocks and minerals, contributing to the physical properties of soil.
Right at top of the epicenter, the greatest shaking felt. It also depend on the types of soil. If the soil is soft then the intensity is amplified and where the soil is hard the intensity is damped.
