The Mayan pyramids were originally built to build religious temples atop of them because they believed that being closer to the heavens would bring them closer to their gods during prayer. They were built over the jungle's tree line so that everyone in the city could see them from wherever they were. Atop the pyramids roof combs that were often carved with representations of rulers.
