Just part of the natural evolution of modern warfare. Not that big of deal actually, the French tanks in France in 1940 were actually better than the German tanks that conquered them in 1940. The men behind the machines made the difference...not the tanks.
The Russian T34 was better than most German panzers in WWII. So what was the German panzers impact on the war? Males just love anything German, no particular reason, just cool stuff.
The German King Tiger Tank - "Panzerkampfwagen VI Konigstiger" aka Panzer VI. http://www.worldwar2aces.com/panzer-tank/kingtiger/
All the battles the Germans fought. At the start of the war the Panzer IV was the newest, most modern German tank. At the end of the war, though outclassed by the Panzer V and VI, the Panzer IV was still in service.
Panzer literally means 'armour' in the German language, but, in WW2, the word Panzer meant 'Tank'. There were 7 different marks of Panzer, the Panzer I, II, III, IV, Panther, Tiger, and Konigstiger (King Tiger/Panther) in WW2.
Trick question. They are the same tank. Panzer manufactured the Tiger. Actually, there was no such tank known as a "panzer" tank. Panzer is a german word meaning "armored vehicle". ALL german tanks were thus "panzer" tanks. The original question could be confusing "panzer" with "panther", which was a specific model of tank. The Panther was a medium-heavy tank, where the Tiger was a true heavy tank. The Tiger came out slightly before the Panther, and thus, was technologically inferior to the Pather in terms of design. It's a bit hard to compare the Tiger to Panther, as they were constructed with different design goals, and were used together for most of the second half of WW2. Alternately, the original question could refer to any one of the "original" German tank models, which were commonly known as "Panzer I" through "Panzer IV", which were abbreviations for their full name: panzerkampfwagon I, II, III, or IV. These were pre-war designs, and significantly inferior to either the Panther or Tiger.
Like Americans, they call their tanks "armor"; in German armor is pronounced panzer. In the US Army (during the Vietnam era) an armor crewman was a tank crewman. A German tank crewman would be called a panzer crewman.
The first German Panzer Tank was the Panzer I, various modes was made but most of them were produced by either the German:HenschelMAN SEKrupperDaimler-BenzReason for this was because the Panzer I was Hitlers first attempt to rebuilding the German Tanks since the war defeat of World War 1 and it took a while to build a model which was basic cost effective with maximum delivery. It was only a Light Tank but it eventually opened a gate way of beautiful German Engineering of Tanks throughout the course of World War 2 such as the Panther, Tiger, King Tiger and would of been the Maus and E-100 and beyond.
The German word for Tank is Panzer, hence why every "Tank" is called "Panzer". Agreed. In 1942 German tanks were named after predatory cats. Tiger and Panther = panzers. Germany's Leopard II of today is a panzer. Daimler-Benz built the most panzers for the German Army in WW2, while Chrysler was the prime contractor on the Sherman. Nowadays the two have teamed up to form Daimler-Chrysler for peaceful purposes. Fiat, Baretta, Daihatsu, and Mitsubishi are other examples of Axis contractors which survived the political regimes they once served.
A few I think that would be famous might be the U.S. Boeing b17, the Japanese zero plane, German panzer tank and the German U boats.
The Panzer is the abbreviation for Panzerkampfwagen which means armored combat vehicle. It is a German made tank used in world war 2. It was not the first German tank. Earlier models were used before world war 2 but the panzer at the time made much difference due to the damage the panzer units did to cities. They were used to advance into enemy lines in combat. The Pzkw I was little more than a machine gun carrier, by the end of WW2 the Tiger, the Pzkw VI, was a terrific fighting vehicle, with great firepower & armour. The Panzer forces were the spearhead of the Blitzkreig. Notable commanders were Guderian, Hoth & Manteuffel. Hitting the Schwerpunct, the impact point, they punch great holes in enemy defenses aided by artilley & close air support. Probably the best tank of the series was the Pzkw V, the Panther, certainly one of the best fighting vehicles in the entire war: The reason for this is the excellent balance of the three requirements of Gun, Armour & Manouvreability.
The two well known tanks that begin with the letter P in use during WW2, are the Panther tank and the Panzer tank. Both of which are German inventions.
The Tiger was a German battle tank used by the Nazis in World War II. The first version had the designation Panzer VI (Panzer V was the lighter Panther medium tank). There was a more powerful Tiger, called Tiger II, or Tiger B, which also went into major mass production toward the end of World War II.
There were numerous Panzer models. You'll find a wealth of information if you Google "panzer". I've posted a couple of links to the right. See the Related Link for "Panzerpage" to the bottom for the answer.
