first ones started in Texas and ended in Chicago
Cattle trails began in south Texas and traveled northward because there was a high demand for beef in the northern states and territories. The open grasslands and mild climate in Texas provided ideal conditions for cattle ranching, leading to the need to transport cattle to markets and railroads further north.
Before the arrival of the railway and modern road transport, cattle had to be driven from where they were reared to distant markets to be sold. Cattle drives could take several weeks. Once the railway arrived, the cattle would be driven to the nearest railhead and loaded onto cattle wagons - a much safer and speedier affair. So though the cattle trails were important, the coming of the railroad was even more important.
The Civil War had a devastating impact on the Texas cattle industry. Cattle ranching was for the most part stopped. Those cattle that could be sold, sold for far below what they should have.
