The 17th Amendment to the United States Constitution calls for the direct election of senators. Before its ratification in 1913, senators were chosen by state legislatures. The amendment gives citizens the power to vote directly for their senators in elections.
The provisions of the seventeenth amendment were that the U.S. senators would be elected by the people.
It established direct election of United States Senators by popular vote. The amendment supersedes Articles I and III, Clauses 1 and 2 of the Constitution, under which Senators were elected by state legislatures.
