Well.. there are many important events that happened during World War I, but the main one of why the U.S. became involved in World War I was because Germany was damaging the United States' economy badly. There was the sinking of Lusitania, which was a British trade ship. It was caused by Germany, and even though Germany said that they wouldn't sink any other ships until after everyone had evacuated the ship, they still didn't keep their promise. Once after, German forces started a blockade on Great Britain, and sunk more ships. This created tension with the United States, because without trading with Great Britain would cause problems to the economy. Then after, the Zimmerman Telegram (January 16, 1917), which was decoded by Great Britain and sent to the United States, stated if Mexico joined their alliance, then Germany would help it win back Texas, New Mexico and Arizona from the United States.

After many submarine attacks, President Wilson had no other choice but to join the war, and declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917. The reason for joining the war was to keep democracysafe in the world.

Outside of the United States, the reason why war in Europe was caused was because of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. This was the main reason for the starting of World War I.

In June 28 1919, Germany signed the Treaty of Versaillesafter their defeat, but after twenty years, the treaty broke and lead to World War II.

There were other important dates and events that I've probably missed, such as Woodrow Wilson's 14 points, The Nineteenth Amendment, and Pearl Harbor, but you could find them on Wikipedia, or if you've been told that it's an "unreliable" source, then you could check out http://www.teacheroz.com/wwi.htm, or http://www.americaslibrary.gov/cgi-bin/page.cgi/jb/jazz/wwi_1 and it should give you in depth details of World War I.

US and world were imported greatly by World War 1. World war 1 involved the world, so you could see the import it had on world just by the name of the war (which is world war 1 in case you didn't know). Further analysis would lead one to discover that US is in world and thus also a part of world war 1. Hopefully this has helped you understand the import of world war 1.
