The steam engine can easily be considered the single most important invention of the entire industrial revolution. There is not one part of industry present in today's society that can be examined without coming across some type of reference or dependence upon the steam engine. But, who deserves the credit for this great invention? Some give the credit to James Watt while others claim that Thomas Newcomen was the original inventor. However, the idea of the using the power of steam to the advantage of human beings has been around practically since the beginning of time. But, no practical uses for steam emerged until the 17th century.
There were two types of steam engines
The stationary steam engine that turned pulley, wheel and gears, which ran the factories.
Then there was the mobile steam engine on rails or ships the pulled and carried heavy raw materials to the factories and finished goods to the market.
Both stationary and mobile steam engines were vital Britain's Industrial Revolution.
They made the industrial revolution possible. Previous engines such as horses, oxen, water power were too dependent upon location or conditions. Such as the animals health, the amount of rainfall and the like.
Steam engines were more independent of such conditions.
The steam engine, perfected by James Watt, helped make the industrial revolution possible. Factories were booming, and they needed a power source. All of the factories soon used this engine. The steam engine also provoked many other inventions.
It was important because during the industrial revolution the steam engine enabled factories to move from remote areas with water power to large towns near the coalfields
They were incredibly important in Industry and transportation, the steam engine is what the industrial era is known for.
I would say the steam engine
The invention of the cotton mill
The invention of the steam engine and the railroad systems.
The invention of the Steam engine provided the greatest boat to the industrial revolution. The Steam Engine allowed for a faster mode of transportation, but the harmful effects of it were the first exposures to Global Warming. Hope this Helped
Most people agree that the steam engine most symbolizes the industrial revolution. Thomas Newcomen and James Watt were two men who invented steams engines that helped power the industrial revolution.
The most important invention during the Industrial Revolution is the steam engine. Also the telegraph was a really important tool which was invented during the Industrial Revolution.

there were many important inventions of the Industrial Revolution. The first invention was perhaps the mechanical loom. Transportation was transformed by the invention of the train. Communications advanced by the invention of the telegraph.
Historians generally agree that the invention of the steam engine set off what turned into the Industrial Revolution, and all progress since then has built on that. Without an industrial revolution there could not have been an information revolution, a computer age, and so forth. So I think a case could be made that the steam engine is the most important invention in history - even though it is now obsolete, and replaced by internal combustion engines, electric motors, etc. Steam turbines, however, are still very much in use, in electric generating plants, and they are a modified form of steam engine.
