Best Answer

John Philip Holland is the inventor of the modern submarine.

However, he was not the first person to design a submarine.

  • The first submarine was actually designed by Leonardo da vinci in the late 1400's
  • In 1578 William Bourne, a British mathematician, also designed a submarine, an upgraded version of Leonaro's design.
  • The first submarine to be built was done so by Cornelius van Drebbel in 1620.
  • David Bushnell built the first military submarine in 1776, it was called The Turtle and was used to approach British ships during the American Revolution from underwater and attach explosives to the hull.
  • John Philip Holland and Simon Lake BOTH invented the modern submarine in in the 1890's, the variations that you see used today. The Allies used the designs by John, while the Soviets and Axis used the designs by Simon.
