The New Testament period could be considered to cover the period from the birth of Jesus until the last book in the New Testament canon had been written. Scholars generally believe Second Peter was written late in the first half of the second century and therefore possibly after the Bar Kokhba revolt of 132-136 CE.

During the first century, Aramaic was the language of the Jews and Samaritans, but some also spoke Greek, as did the Gentiles in coastal Palestine and in Galilee. Latin was the language of the Romans, so some local officials would have spoken Latin in order to deal with their masters. Hebrew was a language used for scripture but otherwise not in common use. It appears that Bar Kokhba sought to restore Hebrew as the language of the Jews during the early part of the second century.

Jesus was never in Palestine. The land of Israel was renamed Palestine decades after Jesus was crucified.

The language in Israel at the time of Jesus was Aramaic, but Hebrew was still used for religious occasions and prayers.

Why was Greek the common language throughout the Roman empire during the writing of the New Testament and not Latin?

Greek was widely spoken in the eastern half of the Roman Empire due to the influence of Hellenistic culture from Alexander the Great's conquests. It became the common language for trade, administration, and intellectual pursuits. Latin was primarily spoken in the western half of the empire, and it was not until later in the Roman Empire’s history that Latin eventually became the dominant language.

Opinion The 400 years period is the approximate period of silence between the time of Malachi (circa 430 BCE) and the New Testament period.
