In those days they did not have any last names like today.
In that time period, in that culture, there weren't last names. People were designated by who their parents were, or where they lived.

Mary did not have a last name. Although she was referred to as Mary the mother, Mary the wife of Joseph.

People did not use last names then, as we do now. When two words were used, one is usually a descriptive, the other the name.

Example: Mary Magdalene-Mary from Magdalene. Jesus Christ-Jesus the appointed one or Messiah.
