I am not sure what the law said regarding the return of the lost son but according to the law if a man and woman had a rebellious son they could take him to the elders of the city and tell them, then the men of the city could stone the son to death - Deuteronomy 21:18- 21.
Therefore because he had wasted his inheritance the people who heard this parable might have thought the lost son very presumptuous when he decided to return to his father.
When the son returned the father ran to meet him. According to Jewish culture it was not very dignified for an elderly Jewish man to run. He would have had to hitch up his robe to run. The best robe given to the son would have belonged to the father and the ring was probably a family signet ring. Slaves did not normally wear sandals. By giving these three tokens of wealth to his lost son the father was saying 'I receive you as a son". A calf would have been enough to feed the whole village so this was an extravagant gesture. The elder brother refusing to enter the house would have been an insult to the father
