The great terror in the post revolutionary war period made all government suspect and the more complex its design the more unlikely the average citizen believed in it. They were ready for a change and a strong head of state who had been a respected soldier appealed to them. The Directory was out and Napoleon was in.
He commanded the Paris troops responsible for the protection of the Directory.

It was right after the reign of terror and everybody just wanted someone to keep them safe. It always happens after a period of turmoil.
