Columbus did not discover North America. He discovered the New World in what we now know as the Caribbean, particularly Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba. It was Amerigo Vespucci who really discovered the actual continents between 1499 and 1504, and these continents were later named after him using the feminine version of his first name, "America". Columbus' main contribution, in my view, was to prove to the world, particularly the Church, that the world was not flat, but round, and that one could literally sail around it. Columbus, therefore, became the first to demonstrate that there was another world to the west, out of sight from Europe. However, Columbus also thought that he had discovered Asia by sailing westward, which is why the natives of North and South America were referred to as "Indians" (because Columbus had actually thought that he had found India).
