Women served in the army, air force, navy (and ss) from pretty much the start of the war, in the same way as women did in the Allied countries. They were also active in all aspects of civil defence. Their duties included signals operating, tracking aircraft, operating radar and even anti-aircraft guns.
During World War 2, Women in Germany worked in factories and hospitals if they didn't have children. The women, who were mothers, would just stay at home to clean and support the entire family whiles their husband(s) were at 'work'. Most German men served in the military. The reason why some women just stayed home to care and support the entire family is that in parts of the Nazi Ideology, Women cared for the young and provided what ever needs their husband needs. Also, this was part of the war effort in Germany to care and raise future Nazi; Aryan, German soldiers to support and protect the Third Reich.
To work in factories, fill the rolls of the men, and manufacture weapons, ammo, and vehicle's.

His take on the important role of sea power in the world
It most certainly did. It brought more women into the work force as well as into the military both of which had a dramatic change to the more docile 'Suzie Homemaker' sterotype role of women.
Women's role was watching children and doing housework
In the years prior to World War One, women for the most part were viewed as home makers and child care persons. This is a generalization, however, for the most part that was their major role and how they were perceived in the USA and in most of the world.
