AS far as the Catholic Church was concerned Henry took an enormous step, when he and the Anglican Church told the pope that the papacy was breaking the Law or Canons of the Church. Canons from the Seven Ecumemical Councils, or at least three of the major ones, defined quite clearly the place of the bishops in the Catholic Church. No bishop could infringe on the rights of another bishop without the permission of that bishop or Holy Tradition! This was a matter that had been debated for 3 or four hundred years in the western Church and some 1500 yrs in the Eastern Church. Now the English had taken sides and theirs was not a Protestant one, but an Orthodox Catholic One! The Anglican Church reverted to the Church of the first thousand years, before the break with Orthodoxy and the usurpation by William of Normandy!

Henry VIII was responsible for numerous changes within England. His most famous was establishing the foundations for the Church of England, with the monarch as supreme leader not the Pope. However although Henry changed England's relationship with the Papacy and the Catholic faith, he remained a devout Catholic until he died. As well as this, he was responsible for the dissolution of the monasteries, creating the Union between England and Wales and being one of the founders of the Royal Navy.
