The major import of the New Deal was that it was a historic major expansion of federal government power from which the US has never recovered. FDR packed the US Supreme Court with justices who were loyal to his ideologoly and pronounced that anything, however miniscule, that had anything to do with "interstate commerce" could be regulated by the Federal Goverment; the Court stretched to reach the result that FDR wanted.
The New Deal also saw the enactment of Social Security, which was to provide a "safety net" for the elderly. In the opinion of many it was actuarily unsound from the start (unlike a real insurance program), and promised, and paid, benefits far greater than a receipient paid "premiums" for.
There are a host of other programs that got their start during this period in history, most of which are also suspect. However, they have become so engrained in the fabric of society that they are now seen as "entitlements" such that politicians, except the bravest of them, avoid any tinkering. Sooner, not later, they are likely to bankrupt the country.
that we all could blaze the spliff in the cool wind... :D_~
