The bill or billhook was developed as a weapon during the early 14th century from the agricultural hedging tool called a bill. It was a pole-arm with an iron blade attached, roughly rectangular with a pointed projection at the top and a hook on the sharp edged side.
The bill was very useful in pulling a mounted opponent from his horse and then using the point to stab through an eye-slit in the helmet or a gap in the armour.
