For most jobs and for much of the decade, the minimum wage was $1.25 per hour.

People in the food service industry who had meals included or who received tips could be paid only half the minimum wage. Teenage employees could sometimes receive less than minimum. The minimum did not apply to people doing piecework, such as fruit pickers.

In 1967, with help from President Johnson, the rate climbed to $1.40 per hour, and in 1968 went to $1.60. In inflation-adjusted dollars, that represented the best the minimum wage would be until 2009.
