im guessing that it was working in the factories, especially women used to work in factories, when the majority of men left for WW2 then women technically took over the jobs making them become more independent. americans were also in a depression which limited the amounts of jobs that an american could have since the banks had literally failed and no business was working properly.

In 1942, the African American population in the United States was estimated to be around 15 million people, which represented approximately 10% of the total U.S. population at the time. This period was marked by significant social and economic changes, including the Great Migration, where many African Americans moved from the rural South to urban areas in the North and West in search of better opportunities. The impact of World War II also began to shape the dynamics of race and labor in the country as many African Americans sought jobs in wartime industries.
From 1942 to 1946 laws were passed in several cities in the United States abolishing segregation. This did not affect the people in the southern states who still wanted African Americans to second-class citizens.
