The Heinkel He111 was the most numerous of the German WW2 bombers and the primary Luftwaffe bomber during the early stages of World War II.
The He 111 was a fast medium bomber designed by Siegfried and Walter Günter in the early 1930s in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. The Germans insisted it was merely a transport aircraft, causing it to be dubbed a "Wolf in sheep's clothing". It was successful in the initial stages of World War II but its weaknesses became all too apparent during the Battle of Britain, when its weak defensive armament, relatively low speed, and poor manoeuvrability left it exposed.
The twin-engined He 111 with its distinctive "greenhouse" nose, was used in a variety of roles on every front in the European theatre, as a strategic bomber during the Battle of Britain, a torpedo bomber during the Battle of the Atlantic, and a medium bomber and a transport aircraft on the Western, Eastern, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and North African fronts.
