The most tragic death in Wyoming is probably the death of Matthew Wayne Shepard. On the night of October 6, 1998, two men took Matthewto a remote area east of Laramie, Wyoming where they beat Matthew, tied him to a fence, set him on fire, and left him to die. Matthew was found 18 hours later by a cyclist who, at first, thought he was a scarecrow. Matthew was still alive but died 6 days later.
