There were 2 Mulberries. Made of reinforced concrete these were prefabricated artificial harbours towed across the channel ( I think from Portland, near Weymouth) because the Allies knew, quite rightly, the Germans would defend all the existing harbours. The Dieppe raid showed this in an all too costly way. One of the Mulberries was destroyed in a storm, but the other continued to be thne Allies main harbour until Antwerp was captured in late August 1944. Cherbourg was unusable as were all the other ports because the Germans had mined them or destroyed the facilities. Some French ports were still in German hands right up to the end of the war.
