Liberation of Auschwitz, Birkenau and Monowitz (Auschwitz I, II and III)The camps on the main site were liberated on 27 January 1945 by Soviet (Russian) forces - Auschwitz III (Monowitz) in the late morning, Auschwitz II (Birkenau) and Auschwitz I (Stammlager - Main Camp) about 2 hours later. (They found about 7,500 inmates alive, including about 200 children. Bergen-Belsen was a concentration camp located near Celle, north of Hanover. For a long time it was a special camp for people with infectious diseases, but later was used as a dumping ground for people moved there from Auschwitz. When it was liberated by the British Army on 15 April 1945, they were greeted by a sight so horrific that initially the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) was unwilling to report it! The British Army ordered German doctors and nurses to tend the sick and issued an immediate appeal for British personnel to volunteer to help there.
