Northern white Republicans were called â??carpetbaggers", which refers to a traveler who arrives in a new region with a carpetbag of possessions, and who attempts to profit from or gain control over his new surroundings, often against the will or consent of the original inhabitants. Southern white Republicans were called â??scalawagsâ??, and were viewed as traitors to the South.

The Southerners called them Carpetbaggers, because they usually carried Gladstone bags made with carpet material.
While it was not a political party in the idea of political parties today, those who opposed the Jeffersonian Democratic-Republicans (first political party) favored a strong federal (national) government and weak state governments. They took the name "Federalists" as that was the name given to the people who had supported ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
