Demosthenes. He warned the Athenians to protect the Athenian hegemony over Greece.

He was not, however a lawyer - there was no such trade in the Greek world at that time: people had to represent themselves in court. He was a professional speech-writer for others, and used this skill to start making speeches of his own, becoming influential in the Athenian peoples' assembly, where he took up the cause of bad mouthing Philip II of Macedon who was expanding his influence over the Greek world.

**The orators of ancient Athens, could not publicly represent people or charge a fee to publicly represent people but they did write the legal speeches a person needed to represent himself. They were called logographers and considered the equivalent of today's lawyers to the ancient Athenians.

Answer:

Demosthenes. He was concerned seeing his home city (Athens) losing face and the hegemony of Greece to the Greek Kingdom of Macedon. In order to persuade the Athenians, he hurled a dozen insults at the King of Macedon, Phillip, even calling him a 'Barbarian' for daring to threaten Athens by force.

Hope this helps.

  • Demosthenes the Athenian (384 - 322 BCE) was the statesman, orator, logographer (speech-writer) and lawyer who spoke out against Philips gradual consolidation of power in Greece and in particular, Athens.
  • Early in 351 BCE, Demosthenes delivered a speech against Philip II, known today as the "First Philippic", warning of Philip II's ambitions to bring Hellas under his hegemony and establishing himself as the leader to oppose him. The inciteful speech failed to provoke the Athenians and Philip continued his advance.
  • Quote: When, Athenians, will you take the necessary action? What are you waiting for? Until you are compelled, I presume. But what are we to think of what is happening now? For my own part I think that for a free people there can be no greater compulsion than shame for their position. Or tell me, are you content to run round and ask one another, "Is there any news today?" Could there be any news more startling than that a Macedonian is triumphing over Athenians and settling the destiny of Hellas? ~ Demosthenes. Demosthenes with an English translation by J. H. Vince, M.A. Cambridge, MA, Harvard University Press; London, William Heinemann Ltd. 1930.
  • After the death of Philip and with the advance by Alexander into Persia, Demosthenes, having failed to convince that Macedonians were barbarians in order to cause an uprising in Athens, and having submitted the hegemony of Greece to Alexander, said:
  • Quote: "No king of the Hellenes had ever conquered Egypt with the exception only of Alexander, and that he did without war...""Even though Xerxes had a huge host with him, he was a barbarian and was defeated by the prudence of the Hellenes; whereas Alexander the Hellene (GREEK) has already engaged in 13 battles and has not been defeated once."[2.3.4.-5; Oration of Demosthenes]
