A:

At the time of Jesus, the codex book format we are familiar with had not yet been invented, so the longest form of writing was the papyrus scroll. It was impracticable to have more than one book of The Bible on a single scroll, so the modern concept of a 'Bible' was not yet conceivable. The Hebrew scriptures were simply held on a series of scrolls. A synagogue might have scrolls for some of the recognised scriptures, or even hold others that would eventually be considered noncanonical.

Luke's Gospel tells us that Jesus read from the Book of Isaiah when at the synagogue in Nazareth. However, John Dominic Crossan (The Birth of Christianity) points out that Jesus was a peasant carpenter from a peasant village. Having researched the level of literacy among Jews in the first century, Crossan asserts that Jesus was illiterate until the opposite is proven. He says it is not proven but simply presumed when Jesus is portrayed as reading from the Book of Isaiah in Luke 4:16-20.
