Gabriel visited Mary to tell her that she had been chosen to bear Jesus (Luke 1:26-38). The angel who announced the birth of Christ to the shepherds is not named (Luke2:8-15). Matthew's gospel doesn't name any of the angels involved in events surrounding Jesus' birth. Mark and John do not record these angelic visits.
In Matthew's Gospel, the angel told Joseph that Mary would have the baby Jesus. He told no one else.
In Luke's Gospel, the angel told Mary that she would have the baby Jesus, but did not tell Joseph. In fact, it would not make sense if he told both Joseph and Mary in the ways described in the two gospels.
Finally, in Luke's Gospel, the angels told the shepherds in the fields, and they went to worship Jesus.

------------------------ In Matthew's Gospel, the angel announced the coming of Jesus only to Joseph. Given the context, the account would not make sense if he also announced the coming of Jesus to Mary. In Luke's Gospel, the angel Gabriel announced the coming of Jesus only to Mary. Given the context, the account would not make sense if he also announced the coming of Jesus to Joseph. This difference reflects the independence of the two nativity stories from each other.
