Technically, the first submarine to be built for use by the CSA and sunk was the Pioneer, one of the 3 submarines built by Horace L. Hunley, who also built the the American Diver, and his most famous creation, the H.L. Hunley, which was credited with the first successful combat sinking of a ship during wartime. The Hunley had actually sank twice prior to its final mission, being salvaged both times.
Pioneer, built in February, 1862, and had to be scuttled just a month later due to the advancing Union forces on Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
